Storage Full on Your Phone?

Photos, apps, updates — how to free up space without losing anything that matters

Text size:

You go to take a photo of the grandkids, and your phone says it can’t — storage is full. Or an update won’t install because there isn’t enough space.

A full phone isn’t broken, and you don’t need a new one. You need to see what’s taking up the room — and clear it out carefully, so nothing precious goes with it.

First, See What’s Using the Space

Your phone will show you exactly where your storage is going:

For most people, photos and videos take up the most room, followed by apps and messages.

Before You Delete Anything

⚠ Read this before you delete photos

If your photos are set to sync with iCloud or Google Photos, deleting a photo from your phone deletes it everywhere — from the cloud and from your other devices too. Both Apple and Google say so in their own help pages. Deleting from your phone does not move a photo to the cloud.

So before you delete photos or videos to make room, make sure there’s a separate copy somewhere safe — a backup on a computer or an external drive, for example.

Four Ways to Free Up Space

1

Delete apps you don’t use

Look at the list of apps in your storage settings. Anything you haven’t opened in months — and don’t recognize — can usually go. Most apps can be downloaded again later if you change your mind.

2

Clear out the photos you don’t need

Blurry shots, duplicates, and old screenshots add up quickly. Videos usually take the most room, so start there. Remember the warning above if your photos sync.

3

Empty the “Recently Deleted” folder

Deleted photos don’t disappear right away. On an iPhone, they go to the Recently Deleted album for 30 days. In Google Photos, they go to the Trash, usually for 30 days. Until those days are up, they’re still using space. Once you’re sure, empty it.

4

Use the phone’s own suggestions

On an iPhone, the storage screen offers recommendations you can turn on. One, called Optimize iPhone Storage, keeps full-size photos in iCloud and smaller copies on your phone. On Android, the Files app can clear temporary files, duplicates, and old screenshots.

Phone Storage vs. Cloud Storage

This is where a lot of people get confused — and it’s not your fault. Your phone has its own storage. The cloud is separate storage on the internet. They fill up separately, and the messages about them look alike.

So a message saying your “iCloud storage is full” is about your cloud account — not the space on your phone. Before you pay for more of either, check which one is actually full.

✓ A tip worth keeping

Real storage warnings appear in your phone’s Settings. A pop-up on a website saying your phone is full, or a text offering “more storage” through a link, is a scam — the same trick I covered in my post on slow devices.
