A new year is a good moment to clear out the closet, sort the paperwork — and give your phone and computer a little attention too.
You don’t need to learn anything new or buy anything. Just a few small steps, done once, can make the year ahead calmer, safer, and a little less frustrating. Pick one, or do them all over a cup of tea.
A Six-Step Tech Check-Up
Install your updates
Updates fix problems and close security gaps. Check your phone, tablet, and computer, and install anything that’s waiting. Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi first.
Back up your photos
Make sure the photos that matter most are saved somewhere besides your phone — a computer, an external drive, or the cloud. If your phone were lost tomorrow, would your photos be safe?
Change one password
Start with your email — it’s the key to everything else. If you use the same password in more than one place, change this one first. Three or four random words strung together make a strong password that’s easy to remember.
Look for charges you don’t recognize
Go through your last few bank or credit card statements and look for small charges that repeat every month. Subscriptions you’ve forgotten about — or never signed up for — are easy to miss. If you find one you don’t recognize, call your bank using the number on your card.
Delete what you don’t use
Remove apps you haven’t opened in months. Your phone will have more room, run more smoothly, and be easier to find your way around.
Save one number
Add the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre to your contacts: 1-888-495-8501. It’s the number to call if something ever doesn’t feel right — and having it saved means you’ll never have to search for it in a hurry.
Look How Far You’ve Come
This year on the blog, we covered scam calls and fake pop-ups, passwords and phishing, video calls and smart TVs, printers, storage, and more. If even one of those made a difference — one scam you didn’t fall for, one setting that made your phone easier to use — that’s worth celebrating.
Technology will keep changing. That’s not a reason to feel behind. It’s just a reason to keep asking questions — and there’s still no such thing as a silly one.
