If you hold your phone at arm’s length, reach for your reading glasses every time a message comes in, or squint at the screen in the evening — this one’s for you.
Your phone can make its text bigger. Not just in one app, but almost everywhere: your messages, your contacts, your settings, your email. It’s built in, it’s free, and it takes about two minutes.
It’s also the change I’d suggest to almost anyone. It isn’t about age. Bigger text is simply easier to read.
Make the Text Bigger
On an iPhone or iPad
Open Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Larger Text. Move the slider to the right until the sample text is comfortable to read. While you’re there, you can also turn on Bold Text, which makes letters thicker and clearer.
On an Android phone
Open Settings and search for Font size. Move the slider to the right — Google says you can make text up to twice its normal size. You can also search for Display size to make buttons and icons bigger, and turn on Bold text in the same area.
Not every app follows these settings, but most of the ones you use every day will. If the text gets too big, just move the slider back — nothing is permanent.
Make the Screen Easier to See
If your screen looks dim, the brightness may be set low, or set to adjust itself automatically. On most phones, you can swipe down from the top of the screen to find a brightness slider. Slide it up and see if things look clearer.
✓ A holiday idea
If family is visiting this week, ask someone to sit with you for two minutes and try it together. It’s an easy thing to set up side by side — and one less thing to squint at in the new year.
Small Changes Count
Technology should fit you — not the other way around. Your phone has dozens of settings that can make it easier to see, hear, and use, and turning one on isn’t “giving in.” It’s just making the tool work for the person holding it.
From me to you
Wishing you a warm and restful holiday — and a phone that’s a little easier on the eyes. 💚
